I agree, I felt he was acting age appropriate to a degree. That being said, does that sort of acting translate well to most viewers, probably not. Comic Carl always came off as a toughened baddass child forced into early adulthood. Therefore, he never acted age appropriate but was rather a little big tough man by the time Negan rolled around. They toned down Carl's baddassery for the show probably because they didn't want him (a teenage boy) continually killing (men, children what have you). I am sure they did this for simple political reasons/AMC public interests...
I do think that he will be truly tested in the upcoming episodes. I am not going to judge his acting until I see more range from him especially if he is going to continue to interact with the mighty JDM/Negan. I just hope we start to see a little bit of Carl unhinged. I feel like he has been continually held back since like season 3 probably...
