Season One Zombie Evolution-running, jumping, using tools

Anyone notice how athletic, active, and almost thoughtful the zombies were in the early episodes of season one? Especially in "Guts", they chased Glenn and Rick, jumped over things, and even climbed the fence as the guys were getting into the truck, and during the walk to the construction site, they were sniffing, and appeared to be deciding whether to attack Rick and Glenn despite the guts. During the attack on the store, they used rocks to break the window, and ran as they streamed into the store to attack the group. Anyone else think that was strange behavior for dead people? Were the writers still trying to decide how they should behave?

I think it's something to do with the change of showrunners. The first season zombies were the Darabont zombies and they got dumbed down when Mazzara came around.

There's also Morgan's wife trying to open the door, and the little girl in the first episode that picks up her teddy bear.

Mostly the one walker that stands beside the tank and just looks at rick, and doesn't attack him or the horse feast.

Keep in mind, this would have been near the beginning of the apocalypse so the walkers wouldn't have been as decayed as now.

This guy really aggravated me. He acted like a street thug sizing up a potential mugging victim. He just looked a little too alert.

Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. With Darabont we're lucky we didn't get "28 Days Later" style zombies. Thanks for the enlightenment.
