Thank You (Slight Caryl and mentions of Carol/Axel

She’s been in her cell for the past 20 minutes or so and hasn't come out.

    He feels weird.

He knows he’s been welcomed back, he knows the group doesn't blame him for leaving, he knows that they’re glad he’s back, but for some reason, without her smiling at him, he doesn't feel like he’s been truly welcomed back.

So he ignores Merle’s questioning gaze and heads up the stairs to see her.

He’s right outside her cell when he sees her body hunched over, hair and neck coated in blood and he has a brief moment of panic when he thinks she’s been bitten but the blood doesn't seem to be hers.

Her shoulders are shaking and it registers in his mind that she’s crying but he can’t for the life of him understand why.

He thinks of making a retreat when she turns and sees him and that’s when he notices the blood had splattered all over her face as well.

“Daryl…” She whispers and wipes away the tear tracks on her cheeks.

“…I should go.” He murmurs and she doesn't say anything but her eyes give her away.

    She wants him to stay.

    So he does.

They stand there in silence for a few moments before she breaks it.

“He was a really great guy, you know.” She whispers and gives a small smile and he immediately picks up on the “was”.

“He was in jail for armed robbery. Armed robbery with a water gun.” She chokes out a laugh and he watches her but says nothing.

“He wouldn’t have hurt me. He’d never hurt me. He was my friend. I was gonna teach him how to use a gun.” Carol continued and her voice began to wobble almost as if she were on the verge of tears.

“It should’ve been me.” She whispered and shuddered as tears began to fall down her cheeks.

Daryl didn’t know what to say or what to do.

He had never been good with women, especially crying women.

But what he did know was that he was grateful.

Grateful that it hadn’t been her.

    And so he thanked him.

Thanked him for being where he couldn’t be.

Thanked him for looking after Carol when he couldn’t.

And as Carol cried and mourned him, he stayed and mourned with her.

Mourned a man who had proven to be more of a man than he could ever be.

Norman Reedus' voice was in my head as I read this. The hesitation, the internal dialoque with himself, his observant eye for detail, his choice to flee in the face of uncomfortable emotions, his hearing and understanding all that wasn't said beneath what she actually said just blew me away. You captured Daryl so well and in such a short space of words. Magnificent!
