So, I scroll through the comments only to find that you took the words out of my mouth :) Rick as we last saw him, is in exactly the right place emotionally...vulnerable.

He needs to be vulnerable to continue the evolution of the character. All leaders need to learn to balance power, humility and self-reflection. Rick thought he owned the new world and the new world just made Rick's it's bitch. Let him live there for a while, and he will figure it out. It's when you are knocked on your ass that, if you are smart, you don't react, but rather, reflect and learn to look at all of the angles not keep re-walking the paths of past successes.

I'm looking forward the darker side of Carl, for god's sake it's time! I think the deck is stacked in the correct way for this to emerge in S7. Goodness, knows Im ready to discuss the actual deepening of a character, particularly from the original TF.
