That opening flashback and lead-up to the current time was done perfectly. The parallels to Rick/Daryl and Negan/Simon were super interesting and excites me for future episodes of them together. Gavin continues to be super interesting with his “stand back” attitude, and Regina got some good development too. Loved seeing Laura and Arat show up again for good consistency with characters. Even Dwight, who I find Austin A. to be a poor actor, did a great job in his scenes. The chemistry that happens when you place certain actors together is what this show does well. As much as I hate the character of Eugene, he too, was interesting to watch throughout the episode. I’m very impressed.

Also, Xander Berkeley continues to be the strongest actor on this show. His character is literally the best written character they’ve done yet. He brings Gregory to life from the comic so well.
I agree. I'm as hard on the show as anyone but when it's good I'll say so. Last night was a fantastic episode. I maintain that if they cut the seasons down to say ten episodes we would get more like this. They are spread too thin and the writers aren't coming up with enough material to sustain excellence on a week by week basis. It's a shame because last night was proof that there is tons of potential here.

9/10. This is the first episode of this season so far that I actually liked.

8/10 By far the best episode of the season. If we got more of this Negan he wouldn’t be so bad. I really liked the dialogue in this one too. I did think the Rick/Daryl drama was unnecessary though.

Awful episode. A episode centered on everyone we don't care about.

    Daryl is a fucking retard.

I just realized that all of those people from The Kingdom died (including Shiva) for that stuff and his emo bullshit made it all for nothing.

How much damage is Daryl responsible for now just in The Savior's arc?

-Abe's death (Alexandria was missing a lot of their top fighters because Daryl drove off on his bike and everyone went after him)
    -Glenn's death
    -Morales' death
    -Minkus' death
-Shiva & The Kingdom's sacrifice being for nothing

There may even be something else but I can't remember.

So this was the first episode in two years that I really, really enjoyed.

As for Daryl, I know I am in the minority here, but I feel like he along with Morgan and Tara are the only ones talking any sense whatsoever from Rick's group. To begin with, anyone who walks into ANY conflict in a post collapse world with anything on their mind other than totally annihilating the enemy is an idiot and is going to lose. Second--this is the Saviors and Negan, whose atrocities have earned them and anyone associated with them no mercy.

I was thinking the same thing.
They would have at least had a couple of weapons but Rick threw the bag back into the truck before it exploded.
I guess it gives Daryl something else to feel guilt over and become "darker" and it gave Rick the opportunity to make the stupid decision to hang out with the GPK's again.

Just a question for comic fans: was the Negan backstory from this episode consistent with the comics?

Remember months ago when this fake video came out? Despite its fakery, it turned out to be pretty consistent with what we heard from Negan this episode. Do we know who created this fake video?

Twas' better than any governor backstory/episodes by far. I would say, this episode succeeded in what I had hoped, making me hate Negan just a bit less... Going forward, I would like to see more of this less annoying, less offensive Negan (which I think was the Negan the writers may have intended, not holding my breath). I say this especially with the suspicion this war is lasting alllll damned season long... Last season really fell short for a character that was already questionably popular in the comics and more of a personal Kirkman Avatar than anything...

The last few minutes of this episode got cut off from my recording sadly... I guess I missed "sick" Gabriel, Eugene/paint and Rick/Garbage??
