Reedus & McBride Sign Franchise Deals, Guirira "Eyes New Pact"

Looks like Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride have signed franchise deals with AMC for very large sums of money which will involve their moving about within the Walking Dead Universe and get paid, regardless of whether or not their characters are written off. Danai is working on a contract which may involve the same thing but is being designed to keep her on the show, which she wants, while engaging in other projects.

AMC officially begins its expansion plans for The Walking Dead, the cable network has signed two key castmembers to what sources describe as groundbreaking multiple-year "franchise/universe" deals. Meanwhile, breakout star Danai Gurira is in negotiations with AMC for a similar pact.
Fan favorites Norman Reedus (Daryl) and Melissa McBride (Carol) — who both started with the zombie drama in season one — have signed rich new deals with the cable network. Sources say the pacts will cover three years of the franchise as a whole, meaning if their characters are written off of the flagship and relocated to another property in the Walking Dead franchise — or depart completely — they would continue to get paid.

Sources say Reedus — who also hosts and exec produces AMC's unscripted motorcycle series Ride With Norman Reedus — will make $350,000 per episode on top of additional guarantees and advances in a deal that sources say could be worth anywhere from $50 million to $90 million. McBride's deal, which is said to include a sizable pay bump, will see the actress score an estimated $20 million over three years. Gurira, meanwhile, is currently negotiating a new deal with AMC that could be complicated by her status as a breakout actress. Reps for Gurira, Reedus and McBride all declined comment.

The new pacts are described as groundbreaking in that they stretch beyond traditional series/overall deals and allow both Reedus and McBride — who started as recurring in season one and have been regulars since season two when they made $8,500 per episode — to move freely among new projects in The Walking Dead universe. That expansion, which is being overseen by chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, started Sunday when AMC spun-off leading man Andrew Lincoln — whose Rick Grimes has been the focus of both the comic book source material and the series itself — to a trio of big-budget, feature-length movies to air on AMC. The pacts for Reedus and McBride allow both to move freely among the franchise as Gimple charts a course that includes revisiting characters who have come and gone with anything from new series, digital offshoots and miniseries, among others.

I seem to remember MMB once saying she took the job thinking it'd be short & she'd only be on the show a few episodes - nine years later she's making $20 million. Good for her. Hope they work something out with DG too.

I know. Now she has to try to go find money elsewhere, work on a shitty show that will probably get canceled and then when that happens and she has to crawl back to AMC they now have the leverage against her. I bet they want her to fail.

Because here's the thing. Even though these deals probably weren't set in motion at the time when Lauren was going through that situation you know AMC had this "universe" being planned and Rick's departure being planned. I believe AL said that Rick was originally going to leave during Season 8 when he was bleeding at the tree and a helicopter would have came in then but he thought it was too much to lose both Coral and Rick just a few episodes apart from each other so he gave them an extra 5 episodes in S9. So they knew. They've known this for a while. They've known since they knew Gimple was leaving TWD so he could put all this shit together. But they said fuck you to Lauren "we decide when we want to pay you and how much you will get". She was probably stunned at how cold they were to her after all these years to just be treated like she's fucking worthless even though storywise her story was expanding greatly and she was filming a movie with Mark Wahlberg and Ronda Rousey so it's just a normal thing to do in the industry when you have more going on you ask for a little more but AMC is just run terribly. No wonder she left. Things may have been smoothed over a bit since then maybe Kang or someone had a talk with her but you don't make a decision like that to leave one of the biggest shows on TV (even now) unless something bad happened.

It's pretty bad when they wouldn't go out of their way to keep their FEMALE LEAD knowing their male lead was leaving the show. Which absolutely sucks not just because she's my favorite character but because Maggie was the best character they had for a Walking Dead without Rick Grimes. She was the most equipped to fill the role Rick had on the show and they were already telling that story over multiple season so any changes they make to characters now feel forced because Rick was leaving but Maggie would have been such a smooth transition.

I mean there was already a few scenes between Rick and Maggie in Season 9 that made it seem like a passing of the torch between the two. That talk about Rick following her now or something. I can't remember exactly how it went. Also, She is a mother and her son happens to also be the son of one of the most popular characters of the entire franchise so people accept him unlike Carol's stoopit fake son Henry. Maggie is the mother to Glenn's legacy. So if there was ever going to be another "kid" in the series the audience might get invested in next to Judith it would be Maggie's and Maggie's goal to protect her son is very similar to Rick trying to protect Coral. Maggie's son would also have to grow up quick in the ZA just like Coral. Maggie is also a leader of a settlement and as I said previously that story has been told over multiple seasons going back to Season 5 but you could probably even go back to Season 2 to see how she became such a great leader. She grew up on a farm with a big family and learned from the best, her father Hershel, the same man who taught Rick a lot (another similarity between the two) and her leadership is so good that even Georgie noticed her and there has been this whole storyline with her and Maggie set up that could lead to something far bigger but all that has to be ignored because they didn't want to pay Lauren.

Now the 3 characters we are stuck with to inhale the entire show happen to be the worst characters you could think of to be leaders. Michonne and especially Daryl & Carol spent most of the series being loners. People that hated being in groups. Michonne isn't as bad as Daryl & Carol in that way but until recently (because they are setting up a Walking Dead without Rick) she's never shown leadership qualities. Michonne was more like a Glenn or a Jesus type. Still valuable but not the person that wants to be a leader. A person that wants to work closely with the leader though and do more than your average person. Daryl & Carol are even worse. They never even wanted that. They would have rather been alone but they just can't ignore the fact that they care about their "family" and that is what keeps pulling them back in. Maggie and Rick are different because they actually want to do it. They want to work with people. Because of Rick's experience as a cop and Maggie's experience living on the farm even before the ZA ever started. Michonne and especially Daryl & Carol just feel so fucking forced as leaders.
