This. Why didn’t Trump agree to this same deal more than a month ago? If the shutdown hadn’t caused so much bitter hardship for so many people, it would be hilarious.

If Trump wanted this wall so badly, why didn’t he get it when Republicans controlled the House and the Senate. Why should the Democrats support something they think is useless and worse?

The Democrats have to stand firm, or Trump will use the tactic of government shut-down every time he doesn’t get his way. He doesn’t appear to reason or plan, he just acts on his feelings or what Ann Coulter says. Nor does he seem to understand how government works and apparently he just didn’t grasp that things are different now that the Democrats control the House. Evidently Pelosi has the biggest balls in all of Washington. Her and Mueller.

The Democrats should just let Trump have some border security money to build barriers in a few places where they would actually be useful, and then bite their tongues when he calls them a wall and declares victory. Most people will recognize the truth anyway. The rest of the money could then be spent in ways that would actually create some border security.

Hopefully, Trump is smart enough not to shut down the government again. It got him nothing but a slide in the polls and privation for hundreds of thousands of Americans. If he declares a national emergency and takes the money for the wall from disaster relief, he’ll probably slide more. Trump’s hard core base will stick with him, but if he loses the center, that is the moderates and independents, as the GOP did in the mid-terms, then he’s in trouble. There are not enough voters who have drunk the Kool-Aid to re-elect him.

According to the guy who actually ghost-wrote Trump’s book “The Art of the Deal”, it was the writer who suggested the title, as a hook. I’ve seen no evidence of deal making ability. It’s more “Gimme that or I’m gonna take my ball and go home”.

Figured you'd blame Trump but you can't be ignorant enough to hold him solely responsible can you? Pelosi and her lackeys wouldn't even show up in Wash DC to negotiate

Of course I blame Trump, he's on tape saying he'd shut down the government without blaming Democrats. Not to mention, the last time they met, Trump stormed out of the room because he was told he wouldn't be getting money for his wall. That's still true today. Democrats are willing to provide more money for drones, for strengthening ports of entry, and other similar techniques that are more effective than a barrier that can be cut through or dug under. But if the terms for negotiation are 'money for a wall' or 'no deal,' then Pelosi and Schumer are just wasting their time. It is not their fault he made a campaign promise he couldn't keep, and they have no responsibility to provide funding for a wall he could have gotten at any time in 2017 and 2018 under a Republican congress.

First off, heís not caving. He said if the wall isnít supported itís being shut down again. Second, how can you people smugly say ďHA HA he caved!! What a weak pussy!Ē When youíve all been crying for him to re open it. Unbelievable hypocrisy from you all, again. I disagree though, he should keep it shut down until we get the wall

Opponents of the wall and the shutdown were glad to see it end and equally happy to see Trump humiliated because all this was his fault. There’s no hypocrisy – the shutdown shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

Trump said on camera that he was proud to own the shutdown and that he wouldn’t blame the Democrats for it. In the end, he was forced to cave and got nothing that wasn’t there before the shutdown began. He’s now trying to save face with his threats, but he lost the first round. I hope that the promise to close the government again is just an empty threat; he has to know by now that the last month has really hurt him politically, except with his adoring base.

So you don’t care if 800,000 government workers and their families suffer hardship because of a totally useless and unnecessary shutdown? These people are not all over-paid executives – they are clerks, park wardens, drivers, mechanics, air traffic controllers, food inspectors and so on. They are the Coast Guard, law enforcement and security officers. Those affected are mostly ordinary people who live all over the country, not just in Washington.

You don’t care if airports call ground stops and flying in general becomes less safe? What about the people who depend on government services such as farmers receiving subsidies, veterans, the poor? Or the government contractors who will never get paid? Businesses that depend at least in part on the patronage of government workers were hurt too.

If the Democrats give in, government workers and many others will be hurt again and again when Trump shuts down the government every time he doesn’t get his way. Better to stop it now. Anyway, as a non-American I can’t get my head around the idea of a government that can be shut down in this way. It’s silly.
