    Episode 9x13 "Chokepoint" Q & A

    From the spoiler ninjas -

    Guess what day it is?

    1. How does the episode begin?

It opens with Daryl, Connie, Lydia and Henry running from the Whisperer camp, and Henry realizes they aren't heading in the direction of the Hilltop. Daryl says there's no way they're going back to Hilltop because they broke the deal, and Alpha will come and kill them all. There's an argument because Daryl insists that Lydia can't come with them. Henry proposes that he and Lydia go it alone, and Daryl and Connie can go back to the Hilltop. Daryl says no way. It seems Connie has an idea and heads off with Lydia, Henry and even Dog. A pissed Daryl reluctantly follows.

    2. Does something dangerous happen while Tara and company are on the road? Do they make it to The Fair?

Yes, they encounter a small herd ("original recipe" type), and Earl is almost bitten. They make it to The Fair at the end. Tara mentions that she’s surprised Daryl and Henry aren’t there by now. She hasn’t filled Carol in on everything yet, but it seems like it’s about to happen soon.

    3. What does the letter Carol has mean? Who sent that and what does it say?

It's sent by the leader of the group that uses the same red symbol that we saw on the road signs a couple episodes ago. They call themselves the Highwaymen.

    4. Who are the Highwaymen? What are the Kingdoms’ encounters with these people?

They’re basically pirates and in some ways, similar to the Saviors. They steal people's stuff and demand ransom for allowing people to pass on their roads. They demand a ransom from the Kingdom, but the Kingdom has nothing they can give them. So instead they make a deal. The Kingdom hires the Highwaymen to protect the roads leading to the fair, and in return they will be given access to The Fair. There is a lot of posturing and the Highwaymen do pull their guns, but they don’t seem like psycho killers or anything. Dianne makes it a point to mention that they had an opportunity to kill her and Jerry, but they didn’t.

    5. What are Daryl and Connie planning now that they have Henry and Lydia?

They know Alpha will send others to get Lydia back. So they decide to stop and wait for them. They stumble across an old office building that Magna's group used to hide out in, and because it has a lot of stairs, they decide to use it as a "chokepoint" to filter out the living from the dead in any Whisperer herd

    6. What does Lydia say about why she escaped or what she is feeling right now?

She wanted to leave. However, she also says that she can't kill her own people, even after Henry made her a spear. (Aww. It’s like zombie apocalypse version of making someone a mixed tape). Lydia also wants Henry to promise that he won’t kill them either, but he only says he’ll try not to.

    7. Details about Daryl and Beta fight, please!

Daryl gets tossed around like a ragdoll! Beta definitely has him beat in the size department. Daryl barely manages to get any punches in. He also tries stabbing Beta with a small knife, but he has some kind of armor under his clothes. Daryl eventually gets the jump on Beta and pushes him down an elevator shaft.

    8. What else is going on during the encounter with Beta and the group of Whisperers?

Daryl locks Lydia in a closet with Dog because Lydia refuses to fight her people and so she'd just be in the way. Daryl, Connie, and Henry all fight. Henry ends up getting stabbed in the leg. Lydia eventually breaks out of the closet and Dog attacks the Whisperer who stabbed Henry. Connie stabs the Whisperer after Dog tackles him to the floor. After the conflict, the plan is for Daryl, Connie, Henry, and Lydia to make a pitstop at Alexandria.

    9. Do we get to see anyone from Alexandria?

    No

    10. Does anyone die? If so, who?

Several Whisperers that Beta brings along to retrieve Lydia.

    11. How does the episode end?

It ends with Beta lying at the bottom of an elevator shaft. At first, he appears dead. Then he finally opens his eyes and stands up. Uh Oh...

    UPDATE 3/8/2019

    From the spoiler faeries -

    From our sources:

The Highwaymen group is going to help the Kingdom to protect the streets after Carol invites the group to watch a film at the Kingdom's cinema. When Tara and the others fighting against the herd, Ozzy and his group will arrive to help kill the herd and they bring Tara and the other safe to the Kingdom.

    UPDATE 3/9/2019

    From the spoiler ninjas -

Lydia and Henry share more kisses in this episode. Apparently Daryl witnesses it too. That awkward moment when your mom’s bff sees you making out with your boo... :hilarious: He must be fine with it since he eventually agrees to let Lydia come with them to Alexandria.

Henry needs some medical attention for his leg. I think Alexandria is supposed to be close, so they just want to stop in for a pitstop. I’m not exactly sure what the overall plan is after that.

    Regarding Connie and Daryl:

I think their main interactions involve their disagreements about Lydia. Connie wants her to stay with them and Daryl does not. However, by the end of the episode he changes his mind.

This sounds like it could be fun depending on how the action scenes play out. Really don’t get this Highwaymen stuff. Hope there’s a purpose to this beyond the new Grady/Wolves/Oceanside/Garbage People.

Also LOL at like the third or fourth week in a row the “does anyone die” question is answered with “some whisperers.” Been down this road already with the Saviors.

Whisperers certainly have a good reason to take as many lives back as they do in two eps....

Highwaymen don't keep the roads safe enough apparently

Like with Bounty I see its purpose in the narrative, but also don't think it checks in with enough character arcs to warrant a DVR keep

Henry's stab is out of the way, does this mean he lives through to season 10?

Sounds good. So Beta appears dead but then opens his eyes and stands up. Is he Walker Beta?

Once again Henry endangers everybody trying to cover his ass for him.

These highwaymen don't sound like good guys, so the Kingdom cut a deal with them to introduce them to communities from which they can steal? Well, I guess they gotta do what they gotta do to stay alive. The highwaymen sound like Saviors Lite in that they demand tribute in exchange for whatever without the burden of a community.

Sounds like there are some throwbacks: Daryl pushing Beta down the elevator shaft/Beth pushing the cop down the elevator shaft; Connie locking Lydia in a closet/Carl locking Enid in a closet.

Once again the villain gets their asses handed to them in every single battle. This is so annoying. And it makes even less sense than The Saviors arc. At least with The Saviors the "heroes" had weapons and lots of planning and even if they were outnumbered they still had some numbers to work with and some strong survivors within that. This is Daryl, a deaf woman, a dog, a girl that won't fight and a retarded boy and they still defeat like 12 Whisperers and don't lose ANYONE.

I'm glad Beta doesn't technically get defeated though. By the way this is written its as if Beta had the upper hand the whole time and the fight just ends a no contest when Beta gets pushed down the thing so Daryl and the others can escape and I hope when Beta gets up it's shot like a classic 80s horror movie.

One last thing: The highwaymen just picked the worst job they possibly could. They are gonna die on their first day. LOL.

Lydia is so damn stupid it hurts. Oh I don't want you to kill my crazy people although they going to try to kill you. Henry is just as stupid as Lydia for going along with what she said, and for bringing her along.

So these highway men have never seen the whisperers? Hmmmm. Sounds like they are just fillers/red shirts so the whisperers have more people to kill that aren't main cast.

My guess is the Highwaymen cut a deal with the whisperers and become like how the garbage people were supposed to be for both Saviors and Team Fam. Only the Highwaymen will die sooner.

the other guess is Negan escapes and takes them over just to kill them. sorta giving him a similar arc to the comics.

If the Highwaymen are giving access to The Fair, I'm just imagining the group finding the row of pikes and getting to one of them and just going 'Wait, who's this guy?!'
