CS Lewis on living in an age of terror

In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. "How are we to live in an atomic age?" I am tempted to reply: "Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents."

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors - anaesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things - praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts - not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.

Should any of us come down with it, we will let each other know what is needed and supply it, leaving it outside the door with a text to notify. I'm in a high risk group - 68 with a serious heart condition. Should I get the virus, I will call my doctor, go where I'm told and use the one and only mask I have, still sealed in the container it came in probably 20 years ago from Home Depot when I was painting a room in my house, to get out of the building, wearing gloves, to drive where I need to go. I feel good about this.

I'm a hermit anyway. I work but am a recluse when home. They're pretty much the same way. Our building is a community, but these two and I are a unit in terms of caring for each other should the worst happen.
I've been thinking about you and I'm glad to see that you have good neighbors. Hope you all stay well.

@Sadie, thank you. We're good with what we need at this point but did take a run to the store for a few little things and to see how it looked and yep, some things were gone or very picked over. Fortunately, there was plenty of tuna and canned soup but the bags of yellow onions were completely gone. Luckily, I always have some of those on hand. I thought the alcohol section would be wiped out but it was WELL stocked.lol

I haven’t checked the alcohol sections at my stores, but now I’m curious

Trump administration to extend European travel ban to include UK and Ireland

The Trump administration will extend its European travel ban to include the U.K. and Ireland as part of continuing efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump said Saturday.

“We are looking at it very seriously, yeah, because they’ve had a little bit of activity unfortunately,” he said when asked in the White House briefing room about reports that the ban would be extended. “So we’re going to be looking at that -- we actually already have looked at it and that is going to be announced.”

Vice President Mike Pence confirmed later in the briefing that the travel would be suspended - going into effect midnight Monday night EDT. He said it was after the unanimous recommendation from health experts at the White House.

NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio states that, "This is a case for a nationalization of crucial factories and industries" in reference to combatting Coronavirus. How on Earth do these people go from criticizing the government's response to the crisis to advocating for government takeover?
When Joy Reid (of all people) asked him about his state's ability to produce their own hand sanitizer he brushed it off saying, "that's great" but then going on to talk more about the federal government. How do they not get it? So much is lost on them. If anything, this entire thing proves we need less reliance on the federal government, a stronger private industry, and civilian workforce to help respond to national crises.
