Are the walkers not as fast as they used to be?? (comic spoilers)

Take note to the Tyreese scene last night when he had his epic "hammer time." The walkers were all around him why didnt they all tear him to shreds ?? He just stood there swinging a hammer and lived??? Any idea whats going on with these walkers?

It's the classic unorganzied mob formula.

You take the IQ of the dumbest person and divide it by the total amount of people in the group. That's your average IQ.

Seriously, for a show thats had such a realistic vibe, that scene really just fucked me up with my perception on the threat of walkers

You know; I was so caught up in their sheer numbers that I did not notice. But you are correct. They were moving in slow motion!

I am thinking it's just a mistake/continuity issue. They SHOULD have been moving faster and using their hands to tear at him even if they could not bite. But Tyreese needed to survive so they made these Walkers move like molasses in January.

There's also the possibility that the older the walker, the more decayed, so the less able to move effectively. Now clearly that can't account for everything, and I'm willing to chalk it up to plain old suspension of disbelief...

They made them extra slow and dumb in order to pull off a realistic gym scene, to satisfy the needs of the comic book fans ;) but I didn't notice how slow they were, but found it dumb that he survived a horde of 20 zombies surrounding him without getting bitten or severely injured

Age of the walkers could factor in to this slowness....but really I didn't notice that much of a change in things. Yeah he was surrounded, but swinging that hammer pretty fiercly as they got closer one by one. Seems unrealistic, but hell take in account Ty's size, strength and emotional state at that point and you could argue it would closely emulate Super Mom powers when a child is in danger.

In season one they climbed the fence I believe in the episode GUTS. Now on the prison they're just standing there all polite. I noticed starting last year they made the walkers a lot less menacing than they were in Season 1 especially.

I didn't notice them moving slower at first, but now that I re-watch that scene I can totally see it. Can you imagine if the walkers just all of a sudden broke out in a sprint?

It really wasn't that unrealistic IMO. A hammer is a very effective weapon and with someone with Tyreese's size and strength, each blow to the head would be a killing blow. So with the blunt force power and speed of a hammer in Ty's hands, it makes sense that he could take out enough of them to escape quickly and efficiently.

Not to mention, he was in total RAGE mode.
